Let me first say the reproductions are poor. Considering the date of publication, this won't be a critical, and it's easy to find his paintings on the internet. The author is dogmatic. This is typical of scholars and critics alike. For instance, he insists that El Greco is not on level with Velazquez. Well, they are two different painters and theirs room for both. You don't need to be swayed by his opinions. Yet his opinions are strong and so is his enthusiasm. The chapters are divided to clarify his artistry, the beginning, middle, end of his career, as a chapter on his portraits. He gives essential qualities to his paintings which are sharp and clear. A more comprehensive book on El Greco is El Greco in Toledo. Wonderful that book is, it is not a substitute for this book. After reading this book you will like El Greco more, ore you will like him less. He is distinct and uncompromising, He is assertive, not agreeable. Velazquez was not a religious painter, especially after his early part of his career. El Greco was, in my opinion, second to none. Same is true as a portrait painter.
